Upcoming Changes to SBI Codes in the Netherlands
The Dutch Trade Register will implement changes to SBI codes in September 2025 to reflect today’s business landscape. Companies may receive new codes based on their registered activities. It’s important to check whether these are still accurate, as SBI codes can affect payroll, subsidies, insurance, and financing.
What are SBI codes?
SBI codes (Standard Business Classification codes) are four- or five-digit numerical codes assigned to all registered businesses and organizations in the Netherlands registered with the Dutch Trade Register. They represent the types of activities a business performs. Each activity gets its own code and these codes are managed by the Dutch Trade Register (KVK).
Why the Change?
SBI codes are updated approximately every 15 years to reflect modern business practices. Many existing codes will be changed in September 2025, with updates taking place between 5 and 7 September. Changes are necessary due to:
- The emergence of new industries (e.g., sustainability and environmental services).
- The disappearance of older business types (e.g., video rental stores).
- The rise of hybrid and platform-based businesses (e.g., online marketplaces and comparison websites).
- The need for better alignment with European standards for statistical comparison.
Risk of Incorrect SBI Codes
Having outdated or incorrect SBI codes can lead to various issues. These include discussions about the applicable pension fund or collective labour agreement, receiving the wrong sectoral code which can influence payroll, missing out on government subsidies, being denied loans by banks or paying too much for insurance.
What You Need to Do
- Check the activity description listed in the Dutch Trade Register to ensure it accurately reflects your current business activities.
- Update the description if your company’s activities have changed or are no longer accurate. You can also suggest a more appropriate SBI code.
- Report any changes promptly, such as starting new activities, ending existing ones or shifting your main focus to a different activity.
